Shopify’s image limits
According to Shopify’s Help Center, product and collection images can be any size up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, and must be smaller than 20 MB. For square product images, 2048 × 2048 pixels is described as the size that usually displays best. These are the numbers in the requirements box above, with the link to the page they came from.
When to resize before uploading
Most phone and DSLR photos are within the limits, so the main reasons to resize are speed and consistency: smaller files make your storefront load faster, and a consistent size keeps a collection grid tidy. To produce a 2048 × 2048 image, enter 2048 for both width and height under Exact dimensions. Because both are set, the photo is centre-cropped to a square, so frame your product in the middle of the original first.
File type
Shopify says PNG is the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG, and it also accepts formats such as WebP and HEIC. This tool exports JPG or WebP in Target file size mode. If you need a lossless PNG, upload the original file instead. If your picture has a transparent background, the JPG output fills it with white.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum Shopify product image size?
Up to 5000 × 5000 pixels (or 25 megapixels), and the file must be smaller than 20 MB, according to Shopify’s Help Center.
What size should square Shopify product images be?
Shopify says 2048 × 2048 pixels usually displays best for square images. It is a recommendation, not a requirement.
Does resizing images help my store load faster?
Smaller image files generally download faster, especially on mobile connections. Set a lower maximum size, such as 300 KB, in the file size box to reduce the weight of each image.
Are my product photos uploaded to this site?
No. Resizing runs in your browser, so unreleased products stay on your device.
